What the ground is like

Alabaster lies in the Cahaba and Opossum valleys, split by the north-south Pine Ridge and flanked by low parallel ridges. The valleys are underlain by limestone (the city is named for the old lime plant), with red clay and chert soils that drain slowly, and Buck Creek and Beaverdam Creek drain the area to the Cahaba with flood-prone bottoms. Much of the housing is newer and built on cleared, mass-graded ground, so settling and rutted side yards are common fill jobs; sinkhole-prone ground is likely in some limestone areas.
